Public Works Administration PWA created for both industrial recovery and for unemployment relief; headed by Harold L. Ickes, provided public construction projects such as public buildings, highways, and parkways- Grand Coulee Dam of the Columbia River

21st Amendment repealed the 18th amendment and empowered Congress to regulate the liquor industry; drinking became legal again; passed by Hundred Days Congress
Agricultural Adjustment Administration AAA paid farmers to reduce their crop acreage and would eliminate price-depressing surpluses; UNSUCCESSFUL b/c lot of pigs were being killed for no good reason and paying farmers not to farm increased unemployment- Supreme Court shut down this Administration
Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act allowed the government to pay farmers to produce reduction in order to conserve soil, prevent erosion, and accomplish other secondary goals
Second Agricultural Adjustment Act same as the first AAA but funded from general taxation, and therefore accepted by the Supreme Court. allowed AAA(administration) to oversee the distribution of the subsidies to alleviate the problems with farms out west
the "Dust Bowl" In the 1930's A series of major sandstorms that buried houses, destroyed farmland and killed livestock; caused many farmers to move to California and inspired Steinbeck's the Grapes of Wrath
Frazier-Lemke Farm Bankruptcy Act A relief effort which provided mortgage foreclosures for 5 years; later denied by the Supreme Court
Resettlement Administration administration that helps move farmers away from Dust Bowl stricken areas and into better land
Indian Reorganization Act the Indian "New Deal" restored tribal ownership of reservation land and encouraged tribes to preserve their culture and traditions; initiated by Collier; some Indian groups didn't like this though because it they would just become museum exhibits- "back-to-the-blanket"
Federal Securities Act "Truth in Securities Act"; required corporations to provide complete information on all stock offerings and made them liable for any misrepresentations
Securities and Exchange Commission SEC created to supervise stock exchanges and to punish fraud in sercurities trading
Public Utility Holding Company Act eliminated unfair pracitces and abuses of utility companies
Tennessee Valley Authority TVA sought to discover exactly how much money it took to produce electricity and then
keep rates reasonable; it constructed dams on the Tennessee River and helped the 2.5 million extremely poor citizens of the area improve their lives and their conditions
Federal Housing Administration FHA agency set up to increase home ownership by providing an insurance program to safeguard the lender against the risk of nonpayment
US Housing Authority strengthened FHA; leant money to cities and communities for low-cost construction- SLUM AREAS STOPPED GROWING FOR FIRST TIME IN HISTORY
Social Security Act created pension and insurance for old-aged, blind, physically handicapped, delinquent children, and other dependents by taxing employees and employers- Republicans opposed this act
Wagner Act also National Labor Relations Act; granted rights to unions; allowed collective bargaining
Committee for Industrial Organization CIO created by John J. Lewis that organized workers in industrial unions

Fair Labor Standards Act set up minimum wage and maximum hours standards and forbidding children under the age of sixteen from working
Congress of Industrial Organizations breakaway of the Committee for Industrial Organization from the AFL. This was 2-million-member association of industrial unions, which included the autoworkers
