independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself as a sentence
dependent (subordinate) clause Contains a subject and a verb, but CANNOT stand alone as a sentence. Clarifies or adds to the meaning of the independent clause.
subject tells whom or what the sentence is about
predicate tells what the subject is or does
direct object the object that receives the direct action of the verb
indirect object comes after the verb, but before the direct object. Names the person or thing that recieves something, or for which something is done.
noun a word that can be used to refer to a person or place or thing
pronoun a function word that is used in place of a noun or noun phrase
adjective a word that modifies a noun or pronoun
verb a content word that denotes an action or a state
adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb
preposition a function word that combines with a noun or pronoun or noun phrase to form a prepositional phrase that can have an adverbial or adjectival relation to some other word
conjunction a word that joins words or groups of words
interjection a word or phrase sometimes inserted between other words, often expressing emotion; a word not linked grammatically to other words in a sentence
prepositional phrase a phrase consisting of a preposition, a noun or pronoun that serves as the object of the preposition, and any modifiers
participial phrase A participial phrase consists of a participle and its related words, such as modifiers and compliments, all of which act together as an adjective
appositive phrase a group of words that includes an appositive and other words that describe the appositive
gerund phrase Begins with noun form of verb ending in -ing, plus any modifiers or complements
infinitive phrase will begin with an infinitive [to + simple form of the verb] and include objects and/or modifiers
