TermDefinition
sciencea way or a process to investigate what is happening around us
tecnologyuse of knowledge to make products or tools
descriptive researchanswers scientific questions through observation
experimental research designused to answer scientific questions by testing a hypothesis through the use of a series of carefully controlled steps
scientific methodsways to solve problems that can include step-by-step plans, making models, and carefully throught-out experiments
hypothesisa prediction or statement that can be tested
independent variablea factor in an experiment that the scientist changes
dependent variablethe result or outcome that is being measured in an experiment
constanta factor in the experiment that does not change
controlsample treated like other experimental groups except no independent variable is applied to it
modelcan be used if a problem is too big or too small to be tested easily
identify the problemthe first step a scientist would take to solve a problem
what are ways that science is part of your life?when I cook, feed the dog, watch t.v., and when I play sports
What skills are necessary in science?observing, classifying, and interpreting data
What is the difference between science and tecnology? How do they depend on each other?science is a way or a process used to investigate what is happening around you. Tecnology is the application of science to make products or tools that people can use. They depend on each other because if their was no science, there would be no tecnology.
What are some similarities and differences between descriptive research and experimental research design?Descriptive research answers scientific questions through observation, while experimental research design answers scientific questions by testing a hypothesis through the use of a series of carefully controlled steps. They are similar because they are both the two methods used to answer questions.
What are the steps of the scientific method as we discussed them?recognize the problem, form a hypothesis, test your hypothesis, analyze your data, draw conclusions, and communicate your results
Why should bias be eliminated?because if you know the answer to a problem, then there is no point in doing the experiment. if you eliminate bias, you learn something. eliminating bias gives you an accurate result, and it is more reliable.
What is the difference between an independent variable and a dependent variable?an independent variable is the factor that changes, and the dependent variable is the result or outcome being measured
Why are many constants needed?so that you can make a true comparison between the factors in an experiment
How is a control used in an experiment?because if there is no control, your experiment will not be valid. the control is just like any other experimental groups, except the independent variable is not applied to it.
When are models useful in science?when a problem is either too big or too small to be tested easily
What are the S.I. units for length, liquid volume, and mass?lenglth- millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers/ liqud volume- millileter, and liters/ mass- milligram, gram, kilograms, and tonne
observationsa personal experience as seen through one of the senses, influenced by background knowledge and personal experiences
inferencesPossible interpretations of observations that are based on previous experience.
for a scientist, what is the implication when new scientific information is discovered?the scientists view of the world will change and what they think about how to solve problems related to the new information.
If 3 variables were changed at 1 time, what would happen to the accuracy of the conclusions made for an experiment?the accuracy of your caculations would be less accurate, then if only 1 variable changed at 1 time. If you change 1 variable to the experiment, then the project will change, and it will not be the same as when you started
