|---|---|
Photosynthesis | The process of turning water, carbon-dioxide and other organic materials into glucose, ATP, and oxygen. |
Cellular Respiration | Cells make carbon in glucose into stable carbon dioxide molecules and produce energy. |
ATP | Adenosine Tri-phosphate, or the energy that almost all cells use to make energy. |
ATP synthase | An enzyme that catalyzes or speeds up the synthesis or creation of ATP, from ADP and AMP. |
Electron Transport Chain | A series of molecules in the inner membrane of a mitochondrion |
Thylakoid | Disc-like sacs which absorb light |
Pigment | A substance that absorbs certain wavelengths |
Chlorophyll | A green pigment in chloroplasts that absorbs light energy to start photosynthesis. |
Calvin cycle | A cycle with the endless cycle of Carbon Fixation, Transferring Energy, and Making Sugar. |
Glycolysis | A process in which enzymes break down one six-carbon molecule of glucose into two three-carbon pyruvate molecules. |
Anaerobic | Without oxygen |
Aerobic | With oxygen |
Krebs cycle | A series of reactions that produce electron carriers |
Fermentation | A cycle in which carbohydrates are broken down in the absence of oxygen, and recycles the NAD+ that is needed to continue making ATP through glycolysis. |
