Problem Solving | the process of thinking about a difficult situation until the difficulty is resolved |
Retrograde Amnesia | refers to problems with recall of information prior to a trauma |
Infantile Amnesia | when a person cant remember experiences from their childhood |
Anterograde Amnesia | refers to problems with recall of information after a trauma |
Top-Down Processing | effect that meaning, familiarity, or context has in determining our perceptions |
Bottom-Up Processing | assumes that our perceptions are built on the component parts of the object or scene that is presented to us (stimulus based processing) |
Depressants | drugs that slow down the activity of the brain and nervous system; related to GABA activity in the brain (alchohol, marijuana, morphine, heroin) |
Stimulants | drugs that increase brain and nervous system activity; enhance dopamine activity in the brain (nicotine, amphetamines, cocaine, ecstasy) |
Hallucinogens | drugs that produce changes in a persons perception of reality; effect various brain pathways depending on the substance (LSD, mushrooms, mescaline, marijuana (in high doses)) |
Scaffolding | when the teacher provides help to make sure students understand the concept on their own (occurs when in the zone of proximal development) |
Zone of Proximal Development | the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she can do with help |
Phonemes | smallest sets of sounds or difference between sounds |
Dissociative Amnesia | occurs when the memory of a stressful or traumatic experience is blocked out (the memory is buried in the persons mind and cannot be recalled) |

Nucleus Accumbens | associated with reward, pleasure, addiction |
Pruning | the elimination of unnecessary brain connections, making the brain more powerful and efficient |
