Definitions

What are the four states of matter solid, liquid, gas, and plasma
Melting Point the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid
Boiling Point the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas
What causes matter to change from one state to another? changes in temperature
Covalent Bond a bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons
Ionic Bond a chemical bond in which one atom loses an electron to form a positive ion and the other atom gains to electron to form a negative ion
What does the flame test indicate? What the cations are in the solution (cations are the positive charged ions)
What is a Formula Weight? the total mass of a compound
sum(atomic mass x # of the element)
What is a molecule? A chemical structure that is made of two or more atoms that are bonded together
What is a compound? A molecule that is made of two or more DIFFERENT elements
Non-metal elements that lack most of the properties of metals
Metalloids They are the border between metals and non-metals
nuclear reaction when a reaction changes a part of the nucleus in an atom
radioactive decay when unstable isotopes release particles and energy
radioactivity when radiation is spread out by an unstable ducleus
alpha particle this particle is made up of 2 protons, 2 neutrons and is positively chaged
beta particle The other part of the broken neutron in an unstable nucleus other than the new proton
gamma radiation high-energy waves moving at the speed of light that doesn't change the atomic mass & number
half-life time it takes for half of a radioactive isotope to decay
radioactive dating calculating the amount of half-lives passed by the radiation produced to find the age of the rock/fossil
tracer radioactive isotopes that can be used to study reacctions in living organisms
What are the different types of metals? Alkali metals, Alkaline earth metals, Transition metals, Metals in mixed groups, Lanthanides and Actinides
