Terms	Definitions
xylem	Specialized plant tissue that transports water and minerals up through the plant
phloem	Specialized plant tissue that transports sugar molecules from the leaves to the rest of the plant
dicots	Plants that produce two seed leaves
monocots	Plants that produce one seed leaf
lateral roots	The small roots branching off from a taproot
taproot	A large root that grows downward through the soil and has smaller roots branching off from it
fibrous roots	The mass of small roots that spread out from the base of the stem
terminal bud	The bud at the very tip of the twig where primary growth takes place
stomata	The openings in a leaf through which gases can pass; the "lungs" of a leaf
epidermis	The outer layer of a leaf
mesophyll	The inner cells of leaves
pith	The very center of a woody stem
cambium	The layer of a woody stem that produces new phloem and xylem
heartwood	The inner nonliving xylem layer of a woody stem in which no water transport occurs
sapwood	The outer layer of xylem that transports water and minerals from the roots to the leaves of woody plants
bark	The tough outer layer of a woody stem
