Jean Jacques Dessalines A lieutenant of Toussaint L'Ouverture that led the people of Haiti to complete independence from France after Toussaint was imprisoned by the French.

Dom Pedro This man was the son of the king of Portugal. In order to avoid a revolution in and keep control of Brazil, he declared Brazil independent and named himself emperor of a limited monarchy.
Augustin de Iturbide This man was a Creole leader in Mexico. In order to avoid liberal reforms from the Spanish government, he lead a successful independence revolt in Mexico. He named himself emperor, but was replaced by a liberal government.
Toussaint L'Overture This man was a Haitian slave who led a slave revolt and Haiti's fight for independence from France beginning in 1791. He was jailed and died in prsion, but his followers contnued the fight for independence.
Jose Maria Morelos This man was a mestizo priest in Mexico who led a 4 year revolt for reforms to help the majority of Mexicans. He was captured and shot by the authorities.
Simon Bolivar This man was a Venezuelan creolewho led Venezuela and several other South American nations to independence from Spain from 1811- 1822. He established the nation of Gran Colombia.
Miguel Hidalgo Mexican priest who led peasants in call for independence and improved conditions in 1810. He gathered a large army, but was captured and killed by the Spanish authorities. He is known for starting the Mexican independence movement.
Jose de San Martin This man was a Creole leader who led independence revolts against Spain in Argentina and Chile.
El Grito de Dolores This was a speech by Miguel Hidalgo that called for Mexicans to fight for their independence from Spain. It means "The Cry of Dolores".
Mestizo This is a person of Native American and European descent living in the Americas.
Mulatto This was a person living in the Americas that was a descendant of Europeans and Africans.
Creoles This term describes a person of European descent, but born in the Americas. They were generally wealthy, but could not hold high offices in gov't or the Church.
Peninsulares People living in the New World Spanish colonies but born in Spain. They controlled the social class and political system of colonial Latin America. They held all high offices in the gov"t and church, but were resented by most of teh population.
