Annual

a plant that completes its life cycle in one year or less

Biennial

a plant that needs two years to complete its life cycle

a material that supplies nutrients to plants

Photosynthesis

Respiration

Soil

the outer layer of the earth's crust that supports plant growth

Transpiration

the process by which a plant loses water vapor

Germination rate

amount of seeds that germinated divided by the total number of seeds planted

Terracing

constructing a ditch with a ridge on a slope that is repeated, to help with runoff and erosion, uses water more efficiently

Contour Farming

field operations (plowing, planting) on the contour of the land or at right angles to reduce erosion, improve soil structure, decrease erosion

Crop Rotation

growing plants in different locations in a set sequence; helps control insects/diseases, improves soil structure, decreases erosion

Xylem

"plumbing system" that moves the water and dissolved minerals up the stem from the roots

Phloem

tissue that moves food (made in leaves) down the branches, stems and to roots

Fertilization

process of adding nutrients to a plant

Guard Cells

opens/closes the stoma, allows the plant to breathe and transpire

Petiole

the stem of the leaf

Epidermis

cellular layer of an organism

Stoma

breathing pore; small openings that open/close necessary for photosynthesis, and transpiration
