| Bureau | Synonym for department. |
| Plunged | Embark on a course of argument. |
| Milder | Synonym for gentle. |
| Seize | To take by force. |
| Encirclement | To contain by surrounding. |
| Barrage | Bombardment of artillery. |
| Unconditional | Without conditions. |
| Prophetic | Accurately predicting the future. |
| Jim Crow Laws | The laws that led to the black segregation. Ex. The blacks and whites had different water fountains. |
| Impeachment | Accusement of a president of wrong doings. |
| Black Codes | Rights will be limited on these blacks. Created by the southern states. |
| Amendment 13 | Amendment to ban slavery. |
| Amendment 14 | Amendment to all people born in U.S. are considered a citizen. |
| Amendment 15 | Amendment to all citizens of all race have right to vote. |
| Carpetbaggers | People who were involved in reconstruction. They were teachers, nurses, etc. They also profited from these practices. |
| Scalawags | People who were white, republican, southerners who supported the three amendments. Wanted black freedoms. |
| Poll Taxes | Law in which you must pay a tax when voting. Was used in the South against the Blacks. |
| Lincoln's Plan | 1863. Was also known as the 10 percent plan as 10 percent of South had to agree with their wrong doings. Rejected by congress. |
| Wade-Davis Plan | 1864. Devised by congress. Strict plan in which 50% of people had to oath of the South wrong doings. Denied. |
| Johnson Plan | 1865. Lenient plan that had the South repeal all acts of Secession, Abolishment of Slavery. |
| Ku Klux Klan | People who were reationary and were against people that were not white. |
| Segregation | States that a group of people are "Separate but equal". |
| Literacy Tests | From the South, people had to read a passage from the Constitution and interpret it. Was used against the blacks as they did not get any formal education. |

| Amnesty of 1872 | Ulysses S. Grant passes law in which all people could come back to Union except for top 100. |
| Radical Republicans | There were military peoples that were in the South for the time being who trapped the Southern States very with slavery. South Carolina, Louisiana, and Florida. |
| 1876 Election. | Hayes v Tilden. Hayes has 185 votes and Tilden has 184. Hayes gets final votes as long as military is removed from South. |
| Suffrage | The right to vote. |
| Civil Rights Act of 1866 | Blacks were unable to do certain things like marriage. Citizenship defined as anyone born in the U.S. |
| Reconstruction | South were doing this Physically, Morally, and Economically. (More info in notes) |
| John Wilkes Booth | Murderer of Abraham Lincoln. Was murdered on a box seat. |
| Robert E Lee | Big contributor to the Southern Army. Led many battles. |
| Ford's Theater | Place where Abraham Lincoln was murdered. Hint, he was in a seat. |
| Freedman's Bureau | A department that helped Blacks start their own lives free. Education, money, housing, etc. |
| Total War | Idea of War to destroy all means of property that a group of enemies are going to. 1. Salting the ground. 2. Burning the town down. |
| William Sherman | Marched to Sea. Was the one who burned Atlanta in 1864, September.___ march to sea. |
| Emancipation Proclamation | States that all slaves are to be freed in certain areas. |
| 54th Massachusetts | First black regiment that was in the American Army. |
| 2nd Inagural | Abraham Lincoln had a _____. This led to his 8 years being a president. The ceremony. |
| Appomattox Court House | Place where Lee retreated to. He was found there and the war was declared over. |
| Picketts Charge | Third day of Gettysburg battle. Pickett and his men charged to the Union lines and they were soon bombarded. |
| Gettysburg | Was a three day battle that had 51,000 casualties. July 1863. Day 1, High Ground. Day 2, Flanks. Day 3, Picketts Charge. |
| Ulysses S. Grant | First Union war leader to emerge. (He later became a president). |
| Vicksburg | Ulysses S. Grant was involved on the union side. He wanted to seige this town in Mississippi. "Unconditional Surrender". |
| Fort Wagner | Fort that led to the Charleston harbor. South Carolina. |
| Andrew Johnson | Vice president with Abe in second term. Was from the South and so was lenient to South in reconstruction. |
| Compromise of 1877 | Florida, Louisiana, and Georgia were accused of not counting the republican and African-American votes. For that they were not allowed to cast their votes. Hayes would get the last 20 lost votes (FL, LA, GA (and Oregon)) in order to win for an exchange that the North remove the barracks from the South. |
