| writ of habeas corpus | A writ requiring a person to be brought before a judge or court, esp. for investigation of a restraint of the person's liberty, used as a protection against illegal imprisonment. |
| ex post facto laws | A law enacted or decreed after an act has been committed that may be illegal as a result of the new law but was not illegal at the time it was committed. |
