Sound | is a form of energy that travels in waves |
What are the two types of sounds? | Transverse and Longitudinal |
Transverse | waves travel forward (jumprope) |
Longitudinal | waves are pushed together then move apart (slinky) |
How does sound travel? | Through a medium |
What are three types of mediums? | Solid, Liquid, & Gas |
Solid | wave moves quickly |
liquid | waves move more slowly than a solid |
gas | waves move slowly |
What is outer space like? | Outer space is a vacuum-empty, no particles, no vibrations-so there is complete silence |
Echo | a reflected sound, sound waves bounce back to you. |
Why do scientists use sound waves? | Scientists use sound waves to learn about the ocean floor and figure out how deep the ocean is. |
What are some percussion instruments? | drum, xylophone, maracas, gong |
How do percussion instruments make sound? | they make sound when you shake or strike them (vibrations) |
What are some wind instruments? | recorder, flute |
How do wind instruments make sound? | they make sound when you blow across a hole, causing particles to vibrate. The shorter the sound, the higher the pitch. |
What are some string instruments? | violin, guitar, piano |
How do string instruments make sound? | they make sound when you pluck the string (guitar), rub the string with a bow (violin), or strike the key (piano) causing a vibration! |
How do we hear? | 1) The outer part of the ear "catches" the sound and funnels it into the ear canal. 2) The sound waves hit the eardrum causing vibrations in the middle ear. 3) Next the vibrations move into the inner ear causing tiny hairs to vibrate which send signals to the brain that interprets the signals as sound. |
wavelength | distance between one point on a wave to the next similar point on a wave. |
frequency | the number of times a wave makes a complete cycle in a second. |
compression | the pushing together of a mass so that it occupies less space |
pitch | a measure of whether a sound seems high or low, determined by the sounds frequency |
