How had the governmants in the Balkans change from the 19th to the 20th Century?
In the 19th century it was ruled by the Austro - Hungarian Empire and the Turkish Empire.
They declined and in their place came independent Slav nations. They wanted to take advantage of this weakness, especially Serbia.
Why was Austria Hungary particularly worried?
They had Serbs, Bosnians, Bulgarians etc living within their empire.
If the nationalists were successful it could spread to Austria Hungary
Therefore they wanted to destroy Serbia.
Why was Bosnia important?
It was a Slav state
It was annexed by Austria Hungary in 1908
Serbia opposed this.
What did Serbia do?
They looked to Russia to support the Slav people in the Balkans.
Russia sympathised with the Slav people
Why didn't Russia support Germany?
Germany said it would support Austria Hungary if they were attacked by Russia.
Why was the Bosnian Crises important?
It reassured Austria that Germany would support them.
Russia backed down but then built up their armies by 1914
Serbia wanted revenge for Bosnia.
How did the situation get worse?
Serbia defeated Turkey and became twice as big.
The Serbian Prime Minister said 'The first round is won, now for the second - Austria'.
