genus species | trichuris spp. |
common name | whipworm |
hosts | dogs and cats. vulpis occurs in dogs, and trichuris spp in domestic and wild felids. several other felid species in addition to T. felis. literature suggests to just refer to the group as Trichuris spp, since these are poorly understood. |
Identification | adults are 4-6 cm long with thick posterior end tapering rapidly to a long filamentous anterior end, which is characteristically imbedded in the mucosa (hense resembling a whipworm).Egg is lemon shaped, yellow or brown in color, with a conspicuous plug at both ends. size 80x35um. |
Life Cycle | Per Os: adult worms lay eggs in LARGE INTESTINE, eggs shed in feces, eggs embryonate in the environment. infective stage is L1 within an egg. after ingestion, polar plugs are digested and released L1 penetrate the glands of the cecal mucosa. all 4 molds occur within these glands. the adults emerge to lie on the mucosal surface with their anterior ends embedded. adults copulate, females lay eggs which pass in the feces. PPP is 6-12 wk. |
Site of Infection | adults in large intestine, particularly cecum |
pathogenesis and lesions | symptoms if in large numbers. can cause leather-like inflammation (diptheritic) of the cecal mucosa. |
Clinical Signs | sporadic diseases due to heavy infections are common in dogs and associated with watery bloody diarrhea. |
Diagnosis | Eggs in feces |
Treatment/Prevention | Various anthelmintics are effective against adult stages but less so against larval stages. In dogs, benzimidazoles and macrolides (milbemycins) are 2 effective groups of choice. eggs can survive 3-4 yr in the environment, act as a reservior of infection. |
