The nine characteristics of life.
Terms | Definitions |

Organization | All life is organized into many systems, including tissues, organs, and organ systems just to name a few. |
DNA | Deoxyribonucleic Acid. |
Growth | All lifes exhibits this at some point. This may be by producing new cells or enlarging existing cells. |
Irratibility | Any response to a change in the environment. |
Metabolism | The sum total of all chemical reactions that occur in an organism. This reguires energy in the form of ATP. |
Homeostasis | Maintaining a constant internal environment (e.g. body temperature). |
Reproduction | All life produces offspring in one of two ways: asexual--produces offspring with only one parent; or sexual- two parents produce offspring. |
Adaptation | This characteristic is found in populations and can be observed by comparing the variety of traits in any given species. |
Interdependancy | All organisms are dependant on eachother for survival. |
