identity | an equation that is true for all values of the variables |
solution of the equation | a value that makes the equation true |
contradiction | an equation that is not true for any value of the variable |
domain | the set of input values of a function |
range | the set of output values of a function |
discrete graph | a graph made up of unconnected points |
continuous graph | a graph made up of connected curves or lines |
dependent variable | a variable whose value depends on the value of the input, also known as the output |
independent variable | a variable whose value determines the value of the output, also known as the input |
function | a type of relation that pairs each element in the domain with exactly one element in the range |
no correlation | no relationship between the sets of values |
scatter plot | a graph with point plotted to show a possible relationship between two sets of data |
negative correlation | one set of data values increases as the other set decreases |
positive correlation | both sets of data values increase |
x intercept | the x coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the x axis |
linear function | a function whose graph forms a straight line |
slope | the measure of the steepness of a line |
y intercept | the y coordinate of the point where a graph intersects the y axis |
direct variation | a relationship between two variables, x and y, that can be written in the form y=kx |
perpendicular lines | lines that intersect at 90 degree angles |
parallel lines | lines in the same planes that do not intersect |
