Definitions

whole blood composition plasma: 45%
formed elements: 55%
plasma composition water, salts (electrolytes), plasma proteins, other substances transported by blood
formed elements red blood cells (RBCs or erythrocytes); white blood cells (WBCs or leukocytes); platelets
erythrocyte slide
leukocytes (WBC) spherical, nucleated cell
granulocytes type of leukocyte; basophil, eosinophil, neutrophil
neutrophil slide
eosinophil slide
basophil slide
agranulocyte type of leukocyte; lymphocyte, monocyte
lymphocyte slide
monocyte slide
platelet slide
hematocrit determines the PCV (packed cell volume) of RBCs in whole blood by centrifuging it. RBCs settle at bottom of beaker. Normal values for men are 47.0 + or - 7; and for women are 42 + or - 5.
agglutinogens antigens; proteins that determine blood type and are present on the outer surface of the RBS plasma membrane. These are genetically determined. Type A blood has A antigens.
agglutinins antibodies; a plasma protein that fights against foreign blood types. Type A blood has B antibodies.
Rh + can donate to +, and receive both + and -.
Rh- can donate to + and -, and receive only -.
blood typing a classification system based on the presence of surface glycoproteins (antigens) on RBCs.
types of leukocytes
erythrocyte biconcave, anucleate disc; D: 15 days; LS: 100-120 days; FX: transport oxygen
neutrophil class of granulocyte; nucleus multilobed; D: 14 days; LS: 6 hours - few days; FX: phagocytize bacteria
eosinophil class of granulocyte; nucleus bilobed, red granules; D: 14 days; LS: 8 - 12 days; kill parasitic worms
basophil class of granulocyte; nucleus lobed, large blue-purple granules; D: 1-7 days; LS: unknown; release histamine
lymphocyte class of agranulocyte; nucleus spherical or indented; development: D: days to weeks; LS: hours to years; FX: mount immune response by direct cell attack
monocyte class of agranulocyte; nucleus U- or kidney-shaped; D: 2- 3 days; LS: months; FX: phagocytosis
platelet cytoplasmic fragments; D: 4-5 days; LS: 5-10 days; FX: seal small tears in blood vessels
