Definitions

Element a pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means
Atomic number the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Mass Number the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Neutron a subatomic particle with no charge
Orbital a region in an atom where there is a high probability of finding electrons
Periodic Table A table that shows the elements, their atomic number, symbol, and average atomic mass; elements with similar chemical properties are grouped together.
Family (biology) a taxonomic group containing one or more genera
Lewis Diagram Diagram of an atom, ion or molecule in which each dot represents a valence electron
Phases of matter solid, liquid, gas, plasma
compound substance containing two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio
atomic mass Total mass of the protons and neutrons in an atom, measured in atomic mass units
proton subatomic particle with a single positive electrical charge
electron subatomic particle with a single unit of negative electric charge (-)
valence the number of electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom
Group Number Number of valence electrons in an atom can be determined by this on the periodic table.
Bohr Diagram diagram representing the electronic structure of an element, that comprises electrons in a series of concentric circles
Elemental Symbol A one or two letter representation of an element
atom smallest particle of an element
molecule two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
