Tax
A payment of money that people are required to make to help pay the costs of government.
Referendum
Process in which a law (or action) passed by a legislature is placed on a ballot for the voters to give final approval or rejection.
Implied Powers
Authority not specifically given to Congress by the Constitution but which is suggested to be necessary and proper to carry out its delegated powers.
Presiding Officer
The pwerson who conducts or runs a legislative body. The leader of a group meeting.
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Based on the Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, this law was created to protect the right of citizens to vote by doing away with the state literacy tests as a requirement to vote.
Speaker of the House
The title given to the presiding officer in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the presiding officer of the Maryland House of Delegates.
