| Laws made by a governing body, usually a legislature. |
Reapportionment
| The process by which the number of seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representatives are reassigned to reflect population changes found throught the census. |
Land Use
| The way in which humans use the earth's surface. These uses are often classified in terms of being urban (city), rural, agricultural, forested, or recreational. |
Senate
| The name given to the upper house of the U.S. Congress of the Maryland state legislature. In the Congress, each state gets to two members to this body. |
Institution
| A significant practice, relationship, or organiztion in a society, culture, or economy. For example: marriage, public education, slavery, or the military. |
Veto
| The branch of federal and state government that makes (passes) the laws. |
Joint Committee
| A chief executive's power to reject a bill passed by a legislature. A power belonging to both the U.S. Preident and a state Governor. |
