| SES (Ch 2, 61) | Combines 3 variables: Education/ prestige or skill of job/income. SES affects timing & duration of phases in family life cycle. LOW SES= early marriage, early children, emphasis on obedience, politeness, neatness, cleanliness. Parents use warmth, verbal explanations & verbal praise, comments & criticisms. More physical punishment. Parents may feel powerless because they feel they need to obey rules at work & obey authority. High stress & coercive discipline. HIGH SES= later marriage, later & fewer children. Emphasize psychological traits of child (curiosity, happiness, self-direction). Provide verbal stimulation. Nurture inner trains of child. Parents have more control over their own lives at home & work. Parents are more independent & teach this to their children. |
