0° Latitude (zero degrees): the imaginary line running around the earth halfway between the poles.

Latitude

an imaginary line around the Earth parallel to the equator

Longitude

an imaginary great circle on the surface of the earth passing through the north and south poles at right angles to the equator

Parallels of Latitude

imaginary horizontal lines, running east to west, that measure the distance north and south of the Equator

Meridians of Longitude

imaginary vertical lines, running north to south, that measure the distance east and west of the Prime Meridian
