Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
Least Restrictve Environment
to the maxium extent children with disabilities including children in private and public institutions or other care facilities are educated with those who are nondisabled.
IDEA Definition of Deafness
a hearing impairment that is so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing with or without amplification.
Conductive Hearing Loss
happens when there is a problem conducting sound waves through the outer ear, typanic membrane (ear drum) or middle ear (ossides)
Causes of Conductive HL
Cerumen (ear wax), foreign body in external auditory canal, otitis media (middle ear infection), tympanic membrane periforation
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
root cause lies in the vestibulocochiear nerve or cranial nerve VIII, the inner ear, or central processing centers of the brain. Can be mild, moderate, severe, or total deafness.
Causes of Sensorineural HL
Inflammatory (measels, mumps, viral, meningitis, syphilis; ototoxic drugs; physical trauma; noise induced; presbyacusis (age related); genetics
Mixed Hearing Loss
combo of conductive and sensorineural
Central Hearing Loss
problem lies in the central nervous system at some point with in the brain
Functional Hearing Loss
involves a psychological/emotional problem rather than physical damage to a hearing pathway. Individuals with this HL do not seem to hear or respond. In reality they have normal hearing.
A small electronic device that you wear in or behind your ear. It makes sounds louder so that a person with a hearing loss can listen, communicated, and participate more fully in daily activities. A hearing aid (HA) can help people hear in both quiet and noisy situations. However 1 out of 5 who could benefit actually use it.
Hearing Aid- 3 parts
Microphone; Amplifier; Speaker (Sound is recieved through the microphone. It converts sound waves to an electrical signal. The amplifier increases the power of the signal and send them to the ear through a speaker.
Behind the Ear (BTE)
Hard plastic case worn behind the ear and connected to a plastic earmold that fits inside the outer ear.
In the Ear (ITE)
HA fits completely inside outer ear and are used for mild-severe HL. May have telecol (a small magnetic coil that makes telephone conversations easier).
In the Canal (ITC)
In the canal fit size and shape of person's ear canal.
Completely in Canal (CIC)
HA is nearly hidden in canal. Both types are mild-moderately severe HL.
Convert sound waves to electrocal signals which are amplified.
Convert sound waves into numerical codes, similar to the binary code or a computer before amplifying them.
FM Systems (Frequency Modulated)
Or auditory trainers; transmit a teacher's voice directly to the student at a constant level insuring the teacher's voice is heard above the level of background noise, reguardless of distance.
