| Athens | This city was the seat of Greek art, science, and philosophy. Paul visited this city during his second missionary journey and spoke to the citizens about their altar to the unknown god. |
| authority | Power or control or the right to do something; if someone has this and asks for something to be done, it must be done; the one with this has power to make things happen or to enforce the law. |
| baptized | In Jesus' time this meant to wash with water. It was a symbol of becoming clean. |
| Barnabas | The Jerusalem church sent him, a Jew from Cyprus, to Antioch. The church in Antioch commissioned him along with Paul to go on a mission to the Gentiles. |
| Bethlehem | It is best known as the birthplace of both David and Jesus. It is five miles from Jerusalem. |
| blasphemy | When someone says things against God; or show lack of respect for God. When someone says things against God; when they curse and insult God. |
| Burning Bush | The first time God spoke to Moses, Moses saw a bush on fire. When he looked closer, the bush was on fire but it wasn't burning up. |
| Caesar Augustus | Roman ruler. All of Israel was under his authority at the time Jesus was born. |
| Caesarea | Herod the Great built this city on the Mediterranean coast and named it in honor of Augustus Caesar. |
| Capernaum | Located on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, This was where Jesus made his headquarters during his ministry in Galilee. Jesus performed a number of miracles and taught many things in this city, but the people remained hardened. Their attitude led Jesus to prophesy the town's destruction. |
| Christ | The Greek word for "the Anointed One," or "God's Chosen One." Another way of describing the Messiah or Savior. |
| Christian | Means "little Christ" or like Christ. The followers of Jesus were first called Christians because their lives were like Christ's life. Today Christians are people who believe in Jesus Christ and follow his teachings. |

| Disciple | The word means "a learner." Anyone who loves Jesus enough to learn and follow his teachings is one. |
| Elder | In ancient times a group of older men of a community that made all major decisions. Each town had a group. |
| Elijah | An Old Testament prophet who worked many mighty miracles. You can read about him in the books of l Kings and 2 Kings |
| Elisha | A powerful prophet who had been the follower of Elijah. He saw Elijah taken up into heaven and received double the spiritual power God gave Elijah. |
| Elizabeth | The wife of Zechariah the priest, She gave birth to John the Baptist in her old age. |
| Ephesus | This city was a large port city along the Aegean Sea in Asia Minor. It boasted a pagan temple dedicated to the Roman goddess Diana (Greek: Artemis). |
| Eternal life | To live with God forever and ever, to never die. |
| Faith | To trust someone or something; belief and trust in God and in Jesus his Son; belief that the Bible is true. |
| Frankincense | A sticky substance from a terebinth tree. It was used to make a sweet-smelling perfume |
| Gabriel | the angel who was sent to Zechariah to tell him that his wife, Elizabeth, would give birth to John the Baptist. |
| Galilee | The place in Israel where Jesus grew up. |
| Gentile | Anyone who is not Jewish. |
| Glory | The power and greatness of God. The Hebrew word means "weight." |
| God the Father | Creator of the universe and the human race. He is the one who takes care of his spiritual children. |
| Gold | A precious and costly metal. It was brought as a gift for the child Jesus. It was also used in God's temple. |
| good news' | Same as "gospel." It is referred to in the Bible is this: God so loved the world and only Son, Jesus. Jesus came to take the penalty for our sins, so we that he gave his one an forgiven. |
| Gospel | The good news about Jesus. The message that Jesus came to save us. |
| Heaven | This is the place where God lives and rules and is with the good angels. It is where Jesus went back to after he left earth, where he is preparing a place for us. |
| Herod's Temple | In Jerusalem was a massive expansion of the Temple Mount along with a completely new and much larger Temple. Herod the Great's expansion project began around 19 BCE. |
| Holy Spirit | God's Spirit, whom Jesus sends to help people. The Holy Spirit is God in invisible form. |
| I Am | This is one of the names God called himself. |
| Idol | Anything people worship instead of God. They could be any object or statue made of wood, stone or metal that people worshiped. |
| Isaiah | One of the Old Testament prophets who prophesied about the coming of the Messiah. |
| Israel | The Jewish people, or the land of the Jewish people. |
| Jacob's Well | This is the well where Jesus met the Samaritan woman and told her he was the Messiah. |
| James - son of Zebedee | He was one of Jesus' disciples. Jesus called him and his brother John, both former fishermen, "sons of thunder." He was martyred by Herod Agrippa I. |
| Jerusalem | It is situated thirty-three miles east of the Mediterranean Sea and fourteen miles west of the Dead Sea. According to God's Word, it is the most important city on earth. It was the capital city of the only kingdom God has set up on earth. |
| Jesus | God gave this name to his Son, it means 'he will save'. |
| Jew | A person who is from the family of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. |
| Jewish | Anyone born to a Jewish mother, who is from the family line of Abraham, the first Jew, or one who is a devoted follower of the this religion. |

| John the Baptist | His birth was announced by an angel, He was born to Zechariah and Elizabeth and was a cousin to Jesus. He lived in the desert and prepared the way for Jesus' ministry. He baptized Jesus. |
| John | The son of Zebedee and brother of James, He was one of the twelve disciples. He wrote the fourth gospel. |
| Jordan River | A river that flows down from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. This river plays an important role in the history of Israel.John the Baptist carried on his ministry here, and this is where Jesus was baptized. |
| Joseph | A descendant of David, He was engaged to Mary at Jesus' conception and birth. An angel warned him of Herod's ploy to kill Jesus, so he took Mary and the baby to Egypt. He was a carpenter in the town of Nazareth. |
| Judea | The land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is known as Israel. |
| King Herod | He built the great Jerusalem temple. He also killed the little boys in Bethlehem when he was trying to kill the new king of the Jews (Jesus). |

| Kingdom of Heaven | the realm over which God will reign in this case, the age to come. |
| Last Supper | The last meal Jesus ate with his disciples. At this meal Jesus told his disciples that one of them would betray him before the night was out. |
| Lord | A name that we call God or Jesus, when we obey them and shows us that he is greater than anyone else |
| Luke | The Gentile author of the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. He was a close friend of Paul's, and traveled with him on the second and third missionary journeys and the trip to Rome. |
| Magi | A term referring to the men who followed the star from the East to find the King of the Jews. They are also called "wise men." |
| manger | A feeding trough for animals. |
| Mary | While she was still a virgin, the angel Gabriel told her that she would give birth to a son. She and her betrothed, Joseph, traveled to Bethlehem for the census where she gave birth to Jesus. |
| Messiah | A special servant of God; a name for Jesus Christ; it means the person whom God sent; he sent him to save people from the anger of God because of our bad ways; the only one who can put people right with God; the one who will come again to rule over God's kingdom ; God's anointed one. |
| Micah | An Old Testament prophet who lived long before Jesus. God told him the exact place the Messiah would be born - Bethlehem. |

| parable | A story, like those that Jesus told, to explain the things that he taught; a saying or a story from which you can understand two things; a story that has a secret meaning. |
| Patmos | A small island in the Aegean Sea (roughly four by eight miles), about fifty miles southwest of Ephesus. |
| Paul | His original name was Saul. He became a follower of Jesus and was recognized as an apostle because Jesus sent him to take Christ's message to the Gentiles. |
| Peter | This name in Greek signifies a rock, as does also the name Cephas in Syriac. He was one of the twelve apostles, and was also called Simon. |
| Priest | A special servant of God, who gave gifts to God for himself and other people, in the Temple. They were descendants of Aaron. |
| Prophet | A person who can tell other people what God wants. Sometimes one of these would tell people what God had to say to them at the present time. Other times the going to happen before it happened. |
| Prophetess | A woman who used a prophetic gift to receive and give God's message. |
| Rabbi | Means teacher. A teacher of the Jewish religion. Jesus was know as one. |

| Revelation of Jesus Christ | The last book of the Bible. It was written by John the Apostle. |
| Roman | A person from Rome. Rome was a powerful city; it had a strong army. |
| Rome | This city was the capital city of the Roman Empire, |
| Sabbath Day | God told the Jewish people to rest on the seventh day of each week. There were strict rules about what a Jew could do on this day. It was a day when special attention was given to spiritual matters. |
| Salvation | To be rescued from evil. Simeon said he had seen this because the Messiah would rescue the world from evil. Jesus would bring it to everyone. |
| Samaria | A region in Palestine located between Galilee on the north and Judah/Judea on the south, and between the Jordan River on the east and the Plain of Sharon on the west. |
| Samaritians | People who lived in the area of Israel called Samaria. |
| Savior | The one who rescues; someone who will bring us to God back from the bad things that we have done; someone who saves us from the bad things other people have done to us. |
| Scripture | Another word for the Holy Bible a group of sixty-six books written over a period of more than a thousand years by many different men who were inspired by God. |
| Sea of Galilee | The body of water or Lake Kinneret, is Israel's largest freshwater lake, being approximately 53 km (33 miles) in circumference, about 21 km (13 miles) long, and 13 km (8 miles) wide. |
| Shepherds | People who raise sheep for a living. |
| Sign | This was a miracle or something people could experience that pointed them to recognize God's power at work. |
| Simon Peter | Along with his brother Andrew, He was a fisherman by trade. He was the most prominent of the twelve disciples. |
| Sin | To do wrong, bad or evil things; not to obey God; the wrong things that we do. |
| Sinner | A person who breaks God's rules; a person who does not obey God. |
| Son of God | A title applied to Jesus designating alternately either His messianic status or consciousness of filial intimacy with His Father (Mk 14:36; Ro 8:15). It speaks also of Jesus' unity of will with His Father's will. |
| Sychar | A small village in Samaria, about half a mile from Jacob's well. It was here that Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman. |

| Town of David | King David was a famous king of Israel who lived long before Jesus. He was born and grew up in Bethlehem, so Bethlehem became known as this town. |

| Vision | Seeing something that can only be seen by the power of God. It is like a dream but the person is awake. |
| Wise Men | A term referring to the men who followed the star from the East to find the King of the Jews. |
| Worship | Showing honor, love and praise. People are meant to do this for God. It is wrong to this for anyone or anything other than God. |
| Zechariah | The father of John the Baptist. A descendant of Aaron, HE Swas a priest who belonged to the division of Abijah, When he was an old man, he and his wife Elizabeth became the parents of John the Baptist. |
| Bethsaida | A village on the northeast shore of the Sea of Galilee, It was the home of Philip, Andrew, and Peter. Jesus sent his disciples there by boat after the feeding of the 5,000. |
| Egypt | A country in Africa where Pharaoh was the king.A country where the Israelites were slaves before the exodus |
| King Of Kings | One of many names used to describe Jesus. It means he is the highest ruler there ever will be. |
| Moses | A man of God who gave God's rules to the people. |
| Philip | One of Jesus' twelve disciples, He introduced Nathaniel to the Lord. Like Simon and Andrew, he was a native of Bethsaida. According to tradition, he did mission work in Asia Minor. |
