Gold What the English explorers hoped to fined in the new world.There was none.
Tobacco Became the "gold" they were looking for. Sent to Europe for $$$$. Becomes first cash crop in the New World. Needed cheap labor to harvest it.
Jamestown 1619 Workers were needed to plant and harvest cash crop. Slave labor makes sense money wise.
Slave The legal property of another person. A lifetime worker. Slaves were viewed as a product or livestock.
Slave part 2 Slavery generated lots of $$$ for southern slave owners. Small percentage of southerners owned slaves.
Slave Catchers Captured Africans in west and central Africa and sold them all over the world. Lasted over 250 yeas and effected 11 million lives.
Slave Catchers 2 Africans were kidnapped from villages and homes in west and central Africa. Were taken to slave castles and traded for $$ or goods.
Slave Castles Housed slaves until they could be put on boats. Conditions were terrible.
Middle Passage The journey across the Atlantic from Africa. Worst conditions unimaginable. Took 8-14 weeks.
Tight Packers Cram as many people as possible into cargo holds. Expect for 30% to die during voyage.
Loose Packers Fewer people in cargo holds; expect fewer to die.
Slave Auction People sold to the highest bidder. Owned as property.
Cotton Gin Invented by Eli Whitney. Need for slaves at all time high. Cotton became the new "gold". Leads to huge plantations.
Plantation Large estate where cash crops were grown. Had many slaves to work the land.
Slave Life on Plantation Slaves worked sun up to sun down, under constant threat of violence.
Slave Quarter Dirt floor shacks- cold in winter and hot in summer. Community and church helped relived hopelessness.
Resistance to Slavery Abolitionist movement grows. "Should we really have slavery any more?"
Abolitionist A person against the idea of slavery. Wanted slavery to end. A growing movement in the north.
Underground Railroad A system of homes used by escaped slaves to make their way north.
Slave Books Uncle Tom's Cabin and Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass changed the way northerners thought about slave life.
John Brown Militant abolitionist who wants to steal guns, arm slaves and head further south with a freed slave army.
Abe Lincoln Elected in 1860. Will try to end slavery. Southern states not happy.
