Early 1500'sKing Henry VIII split from the Catholic Church in order to divorce his wife and gain land.
1578Queen gave Sir Humphrey Gilbert a patent to explore and settle land from Florida to the Artic.
1583Humphrey Gilbert and crew left England and landed in North America. They eventually gave up and went back.
1584Gilbert dies on his way back to England.
July 4th, 1584Captains Phillip Amadaeus and Arthur Barlowe, sent by Walter Raleigh, landed near Cape Lookout and claimed it. Stayed on Roanoke Island for a month. Raliegh was knighted. Another expedition with Richard Greenville, Ralph Lane, and seven ships.
July, 1585Ralph Lane/Greenville/Sir Walter Raleigh landed on Roanoke and built a colony. 107 men signed up. Greenville left for supplies. Lane thought Wingina the Roanoke tribe leader was plotting to kill them. Lane forces Wingina to provide food for them. Then killed them all.
1586Sir Francis Drake visits the Roanoke colony. Ended up taking the settlement back to England. Greenville returned. Nobody was there, left a few behind to keep claim and went back to England. Colony ruined. Walter wanted to make one more colony. Colony would not be military, settlers could have land. John White led the colony. White negotiated peace.
1587Colony running low on supplies and White returned to England. Couldn't go back for three years becaus of a war in Spain. B4 he left, he made a code. Colony dissapeared. Manteo was the new tribal leader.
1602Queen Elizabeth dies. King James takes over. Thought Sir Raleigh was treasonous. Sends him to prison.
1618Sir Walter Raleigh gets out of jail and is beheaded. Lost Virginia property rights.
1606King James gives the Virginia Company a patent for a colony.
May 1607A colony in Maine fails. 104 men founded Jamestown in Virginia. Jamestown survived because of New Colonists, tobacco, and a marriage between John Rolfe and Pocahontas( a Powhatan).
January, 160838 colonists left in Jamestown. John Smith took over. Began to rebuild.
1609John Smith was burned, Returned to England. 350 more colonists arrived. Starvation left them 65.(Jamestown)
1610Lord De La Warr shows up. Delaware is named after him. Peter Struyvescent. says," You don't eat, you don't work" and vice versa.
1619Africans began to work as indentured servants. Agreed to work for seven years. How slave trade began. Colony allowed to govern itself. 2 men elected from each settlement.
July, 1619House of Burgessess was the elected legislature and set an example. Burgess= representative. Like the English Parliament. Parliament responsible for day-to-day things. Split into the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
1688Glorious Revolution/Bloodless Revolution. King James II removed from the throne. Parliament more powerful.
1689Parliament wrote the English Bill of Rights. Gave them the sole power to make laws, raise taxes, and control the army. This would cause problems for the colonies.
1625King James I dies and King Charles I replaces him. Gave Sir Robert Heath a patent for land from Florida to the bottom of Virginia. King Charles named the place Carolana after himself.
1655Nathan Batts established the first permanent colony.
1660'sMore than 500 settlers in Carolana.
