| July 4th, 1584 | Captains Phillip Amadaeus and Arthur Barlowe, sent by Walter Raleigh, landed near Cape Lookout and claimed it. Stayed on Roanoke Island for a month. Raliegh was knighted. Another expedition with Richard Greenville, Ralph Lane, and seven ships. |
| July, 1585 | Ralph Lane/Greenville/Sir Walter Raleigh landed on Roanoke and built a colony. 107 men signed up. Greenville left for supplies. Lane thought Wingina the Roanoke tribe leader was plotting to kill them. Lane forces Wingina to provide food for them. Then killed them all. |
| 1586 | Sir Francis Drake visits the Roanoke colony. Ended up taking the settlement back to England. Greenville returned. Nobody was there, left a few behind to keep claim and went back to England. Colony ruined. Walter wanted to make one more colony. Colony would not be military, settlers could have land. John White led the colony. White negotiated peace. |
| 1587 | Colony running low on supplies and White returned to England. Couldn't go back for three years becaus of a war in Spain. B4 he left, he made a code. Colony dissapeared. Manteo was the new tribal leader. |

| May 1607 | A colony in Maine fails. 104 men founded Jamestown in Virginia. Jamestown survived because of New Colonists, tobacco, and a marriage between John Rolfe and Pocahontas( a Powhatan). |
| January, 1608 | 38 colonists left in Jamestown. John Smith took over. Began to rebuild. |

| July, 1619 | House of Burgessess was the elected legislature and set an example. Burgess= representative. Like the English Parliament. Parliament responsible for day-to-day things. Split into the House of Lords and the House of Commons. |

| 1689 | Parliament wrote the English Bill of Rights. Gave them the sole power to make laws, raise taxes, and control the army. This would cause problems for the colonies. |
| 1625 | King James I dies and King Charles I replaces him. Gave Sir Robert Heath a patent for land from Florida to the bottom of Virginia. King Charles named the place Carolana after himself. |
