Schlieffen Plan | Germany's military plan where German troops would rapidly defeat France and then move east to attack Russia, avoiding war on two fronts. |

stalemate | a situation in which no progress can be made or no advancement is possible |

Live and Let Live | Many troops of both the central and allied powers did not know why they were fighting and therefore did not want to fight. Many soldiers from opposing sides would warn when they were going to drop bombs and grenades onto the enemies trenches so that they could take cover. |

War of Attrition | a war based on wearing the other side down by constant attacks and heavy losses |

Total War | the channeling of a nation's entire resources into a war effort, involving soldiers and citizens |

Defence of the Realm act | act enacted in Great Britain to deal with domestic instability and anti-war protesters; this act allowed public authorities to arrest those against the war as traitors; later, this act allowed for the censorship of newspapers, the deleting of "objectionable material," and also the suspension of newspaper publication |
