Definitions

addition hydrogenation and halogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons; A reaction in which atoms or groups of atoms bond toa double bond or triple bond. Addition reations include the addition of hydrogen (hydrogenation) and water (hydration)
alkene C=C; An unsaturated hydrocarbon containing a carbon-carbon double bond
alkyne consists of at least one unsaturated hydrocarbon to a carbon-carbon triple bond
aromatic compounds based on benzene; often have strong odors; in a ring shape
benzene C₆H₆; A ring of six carbon atoms, each of which is attached to a hydrogen atom
cis isomer An isomer of an alkene in which the hydrogen atoms in the double bond are on the same side
hydration the process of combining with water, H- and -OH, bond to the carbon-carbon double bond to form an alcohol
hydrogenation a chemical process that adds hydrogen atoms (H2) to an unsaturated oil
monomer a simple compound whose molecules can join together to form polymers
polymer a naturally occurring or synthetic compound consisting of large molecules made up of a linked series of repeated simple monomers
saturated hydrocarbon Straight-chain or branched chain saturated hydrocarbon in which all bonds between carbon atoms are single covalent bonds
trans isomer a geometric isomers in which the hydrogen atoms are on opposite sides of the double bond.
unsaturated hydrocarbon A compound of carbon and hydrogen in which the carbon chain contains at least one double (alkene) or triple (alkyne) carbon-carbon bond. An unsatturated compound is capable of an addition reaction with hydrogen, which converts the double or triple bonds to single carbon-carbon bonds
