Definitions

Seismic Waves Vibrations that travel through Earth carrying the energy released during an earthquake
Crust The layer of solid rock that includes both dry land and the ocean floor
Mantle The layer of rock on Earth that is very hot, but solid and is divided into three layers
Lithosphere A rigid layer of Earth that is the uppermost part of the mantle and the crust together
Asthenosphere The soft, middle layer of the mantle
Lower Mantle The lowest level of the mantle that extends to the Earth's core
Outer Core The layer of molten metal that surrounds the inner core
Inner Core A dense ball of solid metal found at the center of the Earth
Magnetic Field This is formed by the movements in the liquid outer core in the middle of the Earth
Convection Heat transfer by the movement of currents within a fluid
Continental Drift The theory that continents slowly moved over Earth's surface
Fault A break in Earth's crust where masses of rock slip past each other
Subduction The process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle at a convergent plate boundary
Plate A section of the lithosphere that slowly moves over the asthenosphere, carrying pieces of continental and oceanic crust
Geologists Scientists that study the Earth and its features inside and out
Transform Boundary A plate boundary where two plates move past each other in opposite directions
Convergent Boundary A plate boundary where two plates move toward each other
Divergent Boundary A plate boundary where two plates move away from each other
Density The amount of mass in a given space
Lithosphere A rigid layer made up of the uppermost part of the mantle and the crust
Rift Valley A deep valley that forms where two plates move apart
Pangaea The name of the single landmass that borke apart 200 million years ago and gave rise to today's continent
