| Biomagnification | the process by which toxic concentrations and harmful chemicals build up in the tissues of animals (usually higher up on the food chain) resulting in harm to the animals towards the top of the food chain which effects the entire food chain |
| DDT | an agricultural pesticide that was killing many animals about 30 years ago |
| Affects of DDT | DDT was specifically effected eagles in Ohio. DDT killed many bald eagles until there were only 4 bald eagle nests left in Ohio. DDT is no longer permitted in the U.S. as of 1973. now there are around 185 bald eagle's nests in Ohio. |
| Oligotrophic Lake | These lakes are represented by a skinnier pyramid because there are not as many plankton in the lake (not as much runoff, fertilizer, fasterous...) |
| Eutrophic Lake | These lakes are represented by a pyramid with a wider base because there is more plankton (more runoff, fertilizer, fasterous, chemicals...) |
| Lawn Fertilization leads to Eutrophication | Lawn fertilization can result in eutrophication of a local lake or pond. The fertilizer that you would put on your lawn would sink slightly into the soil and when it rains, it would all flow into the pond or lake. This results in more plankton because, if fertilizer makes your grass grow it will do the same to phytoplankton. If there is more phytoplankton then there is more food for the zooplankton which means the zooplankton will reproduce and you will have more plankton all together. |
