Truman Doctrine/containment The US President's idea that Communism must be kept from spreading.
Cold War The period of heightened tension between the Soviet Union and the US.
iron curtain Churchill's name for the European barrier between the free West and the Communist East.
Berlin Airlift When the US dropped supplies in Berlin by plane.
NATO Organization to protect Western Europe from Soviet aggression.
Warsaw Pact Organized to fight America and her allies in case of a war.
Nikita Krushchev Russian soviet dictator who replaced Joseph Stalin. Built the Berlin Wall & led the USSR during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Berlin Wall This was created to keep east Berliners from defecting to the west.
Cuban Missile Crisis When the USSR and the US came to the edge of nuclear war because of an argument over placing missiles in Cuba.
Charles de Gaulle Leader of resistance in WWII, then president of France's 5th Republic.
