détente	Period when the US & USSR relaxed Cold War tensions for a while.

Conservative Revolution	Movement away from democratic socialism in the late 1900s.
Strategic Defense Initiative	Also known as "Star Wars," this missile defense system was pushed by Ronald Reagan.
Mikhail Gorbachev	Last leader of the Soviet Union whose policies helped bring down Communism in Russia.
glasnost	Russian for "openness," Gorbachev's idea that the government should be more transparent.
perestroika	Russian for "restructuring," Gorbachev's attempts to alter the USSR to compete in the modern world.
Treaty of Maastricht	Agreement that created the European Union.
European Union	Group of European nations that share a common currency and some common laws.
terrorism	Attempt to frighten other people into making changes, usually by assaulting innocent targets.
Arab Spring	A series of mostly-successful revolutions against Middle Eastern dictators organized via social media in the early 21st century.
