Definitions

Distance How far an object has moved.
Displacement The distance and direction of an object's change in position from the starting point.
Speed The distance an object travels per unit of time.
Average Speed The total distance divided by the total time of travel.
Velocity The speed of an object in a particular direction.
Acceleration The rate of change of velocity.
Force A push or pull.
Newtons The unit that force is measured in.
Net Force When two or more forces act on an object at the same time, the forces combine to form this.
Balanced Forces Forces on an object that are equal in size and opposite in direction.
Unbalanced Forces When forces combine to produce a net force that is not zero, the forces acting on the object are this.
Inertia The tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion.
Friction The force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are touching.
Static Friction The frictional force that prevents two surfaces in contact from sliding past each other.
Sliding Friction The force that acts in the opposite direction to the motion of a surface sliding on another surface.
Air Resistance Opposes the motion of objects that move through the air.
