Fugitive Slave Act Part of the Compromise of 1850:
- required all citizens to help catch runaway slaves and allowed for the punishment of anyone who aided in their escape
- judges of special courts were paid to return slaves.
- north was outraged and defied the law, resisted slave owners who came north
Uncle Tom's Cabin book written by Harriett Beecher Stowe (acted kinda like Common Sense - Thomas Paine) sold 300,000 copies the first year. eventually sold over 6.5 million copies world wide. Novel depicted the evils of slavery. It helped develop an abolitionist movement in the North. angered people in south!
