Plan
What is the objective of this course? What can the students expect? What materials will you need to teach? Think about these things as you begin to plan out the pacing and sequencing of your online course.
Prepare
How much time will it take you to complete each module, and how much time will it take the average student? At this point you will want to look at your materials and content in order to set up a calendar and/or to-do list that will keep you on task and up to speed.
Welcome
It's time to present your online learning system to your students. Be sure to create a welcome page and ice breaker activity that sets a positive tone and supportive environment.
Connect
Your students are in! They may have completed a module or ice breaker activity, but have they connected with you and each other? From this point forward you'll need to facilitate discussions, answer questions, and follow your students as they begin to create relationships with each other, with you, and most importantly... with the content!
Revise
Now that the course is moving along you'll find the need to make changes. Holidays, illness, or any number of things will throw off the pacing and sequence of your course. Part of being an educator means being flexible. Be ready to make revisions as necessary in order to meet the needs of your students so they can meet the needs of the curriculum.
Encouraging Feedback
Positive feedback of your students' work will encourage them to ask questions, look deeper, and make stronger connections to your course content. Help your learners meet their own needs by encouraging their growth.
Maintain
Chat rooms and discussion forums need a monitor. Your LMS will need links updated and files uploaded. As instructor you may not need to see your students, but they need to see the content - be ready to maintain that environment.
Recreate
Lesson 9 may have seemed like a good idea when you were starting Lesson 1, but now you're realizing it doesn't fit your students' learning styles. That's OK. Don't be afraid of change. You may not need to recreate the wheel, but you may have to recreate this lesson.
Support
As your course comes to it's end you'll need to provide one important thing for your students. Support. Remind them of where they've been so they can get where they need to go. The end!
Reflect
How did it go? Did everyone finish and get what they need from the class? Look back at the course and see what you can do differently. Get feedback from your students with a survey or online form and take their comments to heart. We can always do at least one thing a little better.
