Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Mexican general and President who led forces during the Alamo and signed the treaty that established the Texas boundary at the Rio Grande.
The Alamo Battle that lasted 13 days in February and March of 1836. It was 187 Texans vs. 5,000 Mexicans (led by Santa Anna). The battle ended on March 6 with the result of 1,500 Mexicans dead and no remaining Texans.
Sam Houston Texas general who led an army of American and Texan volunteers. He was the first and only President of the Republic of Texas.
Republic of Texas This was the name given to the new government set up for ther Texas Territory after the Battle of San Jacinto.
John Tyler 10th President of the United States who assumed office after the death of William Henry Harrison; he favored the annexation of Texas; was eventually kicked out of his own political party.
Henry Clay This man was the Whig presidential candidate in the election of 1844; lost to Polk.
Election of 1844 This election pitted James Polk (D) vs. Henry Clay (Whig) vs. James G. Birney (Liberty); Polk wins 170-105 electorally.
James Polk 11th President of the United States who won the election of 1844 as the Democratic candidate; immediately passed the annexation of Texas.

Bear Flag Revolt The American settlers declared their informal independence from Mexico at this protest.
John Slidell This man was sent by the federal government in 1845 to Mexico with a $30 million offer to have the Rio Grande border Texas and Mexico.
Colonel Stephen Kearny This American Army general was a main force in the conquest of California; he later succeeded John C. Fremont as California's Military Governor.
General Winfield Scott This American Army general was the commander of the U.S. southern forces during the Mexican-American War; also known famously for capturing Mexico City.
Nicholas Trist This man was the deliverer of Polk's Terms of Peace; main negotiator of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo This agreement officially ended the Mexican-American War; it ceded Northern California and New Mexico in what was known as the Mexican Cession (this included the present-day state of Arizona, as well as portions of present-day Utah, Colorado, and Nevada); Mexico gave up all of its claims to Texas, and it recognized that the Rio Grande was the southern border between Mexico and Texas.
California Gold Rush This was known as an influx of settlers migrating west in order to test their riches at finding gold throughout this state.
Johan Sutter This man was the owner of the land where James Marshall discovered the 1st gold that began the California Gold Rush.
James Marshall This man was the 1st person to disover gold in Calfornia; his discovery led to the California Gold Rush.
Franklin Pierce 14th President of the United States, he was a general during the Mexican-American War who assisted Winfield Scott as well as led a brigade of troops during the capture of Mexico City.
Matthew Perry Commodore that was dispatched by president Franklin Pierce across the Pacific to Japan. The mission ended in 1854 with a commercial treaty that opened Japan to American trade. Perry's feat caused a newspaper in tiny Olympia, WA.
Election of 1848 Zachary Taylor ran for the Whigs and Lewis Cass for the Democrats. Van Buren also ran to steal votes from the Democrats. Taylor won with a 47% majority vote.
Emily Morgan Miloto slave take by Santa Anna to serve as a servant and a sexual partner; looked at as hero of the Texas Revolution; yellow rose of Texas.
Oregon Treaty This agreement set the border up west at the 49th parallel, and furthermore ended the border disputes of Britain and the U.S. as a result of the Convention of 1818.
Treaty of Kanagawa Signed in 1853; opened up trade between the U.S. and Japan.
Rio Grande Southern border of Texas which was established as part of the Treaty of Guadelope.
David Wilmot Congressmen from Pennsylvania; proposed a bill in 1846 (bill stated that all territory received from Mexico would be slave free; bill became known as Wilmot Proviso).
James Birney Presidential candidate for the liberty party in the election of 1844.
49 degrees north latitude Northern boundery of the U.S. established by the Oregon Treaty.
