plosive

the airstream is briefly stopped in the oral cavity, thus building up pressure before it is released

fricative

sounds in which airstream is not totally stopped, but is obstructed to a narrow area.

affricate

these sounds combine a stop and a fricative, pronounced in rapid succession.

glide

Little or no obstruction to the airstream in the mouth

Liquid

the airstream is obstructed but not so much to stop or cause friction

nasal

air stream is directed primarily through the nasal cavity
