Definitions

Orthodoxy a doctrine, belief, attitude, or teaching that is consistent with revealed truth and with the church's doctrine of faith (doesn't change)
Orthopraxy The emphasis on what one practices in a religion
William Perkins "Theology is the science of living blessedly forever" 16th century
Aims "Theology is no other than living to know God" 1610
Theology Theos = God / Logos = word / theology is developmental = not new stuff...just explaining and clarifying -> should be PRESCIPTIVE not DESCRIPTIVE
Issue with Theology Context -> comes from worldview(how one looks at the world) ->> It is a person's attempt to describe whats going on in the world around them
Contextualization The efforts of formulation, presenting and practicing the Christian faith in such a way that it is relevant to the cultural context of the target group in terms of expression and application, yet maintainging theological coherence, biblical integrity and theoritical consistency; Form vs. Body
Theological Triage evaluate case by case and rate them for urgency
3 Levels of theological debate 1.) Central to the Christian faith 2.) non-essential for Salvation but vital to Christian life/practice 3.) non-essentials
Central to the Christian Faith non-negotiables for Salvation -> Heresy = any doctrine in belief that would send you to hell ->> ex: Trinity/Justification
Non-essential but vital to Christian practice causes divides between denominations -> ex: Baptism/ What the Lord's supper means/ Style of worship
Non-essentials agree to disagree -> "I might be wrong, but here's where I'm at now" ->> ex: Eschatology(end times)/ Arminianism vs. Calvinism/ Style of Worship
