|---|---|
status surveys | descriptive surveys about the current status of the population sampled |
specific objectives | state exactly what types of data will be collected and specify the particular hypotheses to be explored |
select a representative sample | most important aspect of sampling |
nonprobability samples | not everybody in the population has an equal chance of being selected.issue: may not be representative |
convenience sampling | nonprobability samples containing whatever individuals are readily available, with no attempt to make the samples representative of the population |
snowball sampling | a nonprobabilistic sampling technique in which one or more members of a population are located and used to lead the researchers to other members of the population |
probability sampling | a sampling procedure used to ensure that each person in a population has a known chance of being selected to be part of the sample |
simple-random sampling | a probabilistic sampling technique in which each person in the population has an equal chance of being included in the sample |
systematic random sampling | a probability sampling technique that involves selecting every nth person from a sampling frame |
stratified random sampling | a probability sampling technique that involves dividing a sample into subgroups (strata) and then selecting samples from each of these groups |
cross sectional research designs | research in which comparisons are made across different age groups but all age groups are measured at the same time |
longitudinal designs | research in which the same individuals are measured more than one time and the time period between measurements is long enough that changes in the variables of interest could occur |
