Adaptive Radiation process by which a single species or small group of species evolves into several different forms that live in different ways; rapid growth in the diversity of a group of organisms
Climax Community a mature community, such as a boreal forest, tropical rainforest, grassland, or desert, that continues to change over time
Ecological Succession a gradual process where plants and animals slowly start to live in a certain area, and/or slowly start to become more abundant and with more species
Natural Selection a natural process resulting in the evolution of organisms best adapted to the environment
Primary Succession an ecological succession that begins in a an area where no biotic community previously existed
Secondary Succession succession following a disturbance that destroys a community without destroying the soil
Pioneer Species first species to populate an area during primary succession
Insect Infestation When there is a huge number of insects. Like the pine beetle infestation, this can do a lot of damage to an ecosystem
Drought a long period without rain. Can greatly affect an ecosystem
