Adaptive Radiation | process by which a single species or small group of species evolves into several different forms that live in different ways; rapid growth in the diversity of a group of organisms |
Climax Community | a mature community, such as a boreal forest, tropical rainforest, grassland, or desert, that continues to change over time |
Ecological Succession | a gradual process where plants and animals slowly start to live in a certain area, and/or slowly start to become more abundant and with more species |
Natural Selection | a natural process resulting in the evolution of organisms best adapted to the environment |
Primary Succession | an ecological succession that begins in a an area where no biotic community previously existed |
Secondary Succession | succession following a disturbance that destroys a community without destroying the soil |
Pioneer Species | first species to populate an area during primary succession |
Insect Infestation | When there is a huge number of insects. Like the pine beetle infestation, this can do a lot of damage to an ecosystem |
Drought | a long period without rain. Can greatly affect an ecosystem |
Tsunami | a huge destructive wave (especially one caused by an earthquake). Can wipe out entire ecysystems |
