Family and Medical Leave Act Requires employers to grant up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to employees caring for a new child or seriously ill relative
Age Discrimination in Employment Act Act that prohibits discrimination in employment for persons age 40 and over except where age is a bona fide occupational qualification.
Title VII Section of the Civil Rights Act that prohibited discrimination based on race, religion, or national origin. Used by women to fight discrimination
Pregnancy Discrimination Act Act that prohibits discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related conditions.
Americans with Disabilities Act Act that prohibits discrimination against a qualified individual with a disability because of the disability of such individual.
Equal Pay Act Made it illegal for employers to pay female workers less than men for the same job
Fair Labor Standards Act Sets minimum wage, requires over-time pay for time worked over 40 hours, and restricts the employment of minors.
Labor Union An organization of workers that tries to improve working conditions, wages, and benefits for its members
Collective Bargaining Negotiations between workers and their employers
Contract Issues Salary and benefits and job security and working conditions
Mediation A process in which each side is given the opportunity to explain its side of the dispute and must listen to the other side
Arbitration Settling a dispute by agreeing to accept the decision of an impartial outsider
