A person who runs a colony or state.

French and Indian War

A war between Great Britain and France and its Native American allies. 1754-1759.

Stamp Act

An act passed by Great Britain in 1765 that placed taxes on newspapers and pamphlets.

Patriot

A colonist who was opposed to British rule.

Loyalist

A colonist who remained loyal to Great Britain.

volunteer group of soldiers

American Revolution

The war fought by the American colonies to end British rule, 1775-1783.

Continental Congress

A group of colonists who met in Philadelphia in 1775 to discuss how the colonies should deal with Great Britain.

Declaration of Independence

A document written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776 explaining why the 13 colonies should be free of British rule.

Battle of Saratoga

A Revolutionary War battle fought in 1777. It was an important victory for the Americans because it helped convince the French that the American could win the war.

Battle of Yorktown

The final battle of the American Revolution.
