Definitions

The eight types are classified according to the way cells are arranged in layers, and by the shape.
Simple Layers One layer
Stratified Layers Sever layers
Pseudostratified One layer that appears as several
Squamous shaped Flat
Cuboidal shaped Cube like
Columnar shaped Rectangular
Transitional shaped Variable
Simple Squamous Single layer of flat, scale like cells
Simple Cuboidal A single layer of cube shaped cells and performs the functions of secretion & absorption
Simple Columnar Single layer of retangular cells and can exist in 2 forms
Nonciliated Simple Columnar contains microvilli to increase surface area and the rate of absorption and goblet cells that secrete mucus
Ciliated Simple Columnar contains cells with cilia, motile, hair like processes that help to move fluids or particles along a surface.
Stratified squamous consists of several layers of cells in which the top layer of the cell is flat, and the deeper layers of the cell vary in shape
Keratinized Stratified Squamous A tough layer of keratin is deposited in the surface cells
Nonkeratinized Stratified Squamous Doesn't contain keratin and remains moist
Stratified cuboidal Rare tissue consisting of 2 or more layers of cube like shaped cells whose function is mainly protection
Stratified Columnar Several layers of cells which only the top layer is columnar
Pseudostratified Epithelium All cells are attched to the basement membrane but some don't reach the apical structure
Pseudostratified Ciliated columnar the cells that reach the surface either secrete mucusor bear cilia that sweep away mucus and trapped foreign particles
Pseudostratified nonciliated columnar contains no cilia or goblet cells
