An-mei Hsu | mother\ An-mei is the mother of Rose. An-Mei Hsu learns lessons in stoic and severe love from her grandmother, Popo, and from her mother. She lost her faith the day her son Bing drowned to death. She wishes her daughter Rose would speak up more and not let her husband Ted make decisions for her. She is symbolized as a ghost because her grandmother told her, her mother was a ghost. |
Lindo Jong | mother/ Lindo's daughter is Waverly. Lindo has invisible strength. Invisible Strength is the power of hiding one's thoughts until the time is ripe to reveal them, and of believing in one's inner force even when one finds oneself at a disadvantage. Ying-ying was born in the year of the Tiger, a creature of force and stealth though as a young girl she is taught that young girls should be meek and passive. At a young age she is faced with a trauma that changes her life forever (Moon Lady Festival). She always listend to omens and signs, she never paid attention to her inner feelings. She passed these traits to her daughter Lena. She wants Lena to become independent and make decisions for herself. She is symbolized as the tiger beuase she was born in the year of the tiger. |
Jing- Mei "june" Woo | daughter/ Jing-mei Woo is the main character of The Joy Luck Club. Her mother is Suyuan Woo the founder of the Joy Luck Club. At the end of the book she goes to china to connect with her sisters. By doing this she fulfills her mothers expectations. She believes that her mother's constant criticism of what she does shows that she doesn't love her; but that isn't true. The lobster symbolizes June because the night of the Chinese New Years June picks the worst lobster. This shows June doesn't pick the "Best Quality." |
Rose Hsu Jordan | daughter/ Is the daughter of An-mei. Rose is unable to assert her opinion, to stand up for herself, or to make decisions.Rose marries a man name Ted & is unable to speak her opinion. Her mother wants her to speak up and be assertive. In the end when Ted and Rose divorce her mother is the voice that helps her get through it all. Rose symbolizes a mouse because she is quiet and doesn't speak up. |
Waverly Jong | daughter/ Waverly is the daughter of Lindo. Waverly Inherits her mothers invisible strength. Waverly's focus on invisible strength also contributes to a sense of competitiveness: she has a rivalry with Jing-mei. Waverly is not entirely self-centered: she loves her daughter, Shoshana, unconditionally and she has insecurities: she fears her mother's criticism of her fiancé, Rich who is an American. Waverly tends to project her fears and dislikes onto her mother. Waverly doesn't like the way her mother wants her to do things so traditionally. Waverly symbolizes a mirror because she is very self absorbed. |
Lena St. Clair | daughter/ Lena is the daughter of Ying-Ying. Lena is in an unhappy marriage to Harold Livotny. Harold insists that the couple keep separate bank accounts and use a balance sheet to detail their monetary debts to one another. Lena hates this and is unwilling to speak up so she goes along with it. As a child she learns an important lesson from her neighbors. When she hears shouting and weeping through the wall it shows a kind of deep love between mother and daughter, she realizes the importance of expressing one's feelings, even at the cost of peace and harmony. She knows her mother wants her to show emotion and feeling but she like the others believe everything happens for a reason and they can't change the result. She is symbolized as the Scale because her life is so unbalnced. |
