autocrat A single ruler with complete authority.
czars The Russian autocratic rulers; czar is Russian for Caesar.

Justinian Byzantine emperor who reigned from 527 to 565. The Byzantine empire reached its peak during his reign.
Justinian's Code The "body of civil law" compiled by Justinian's scholars; comprised of Roman laws, legal writings, and even a student handbook. Modern international law is still influenced by Justinian's Code. (45)
Kiev Center of the first Russian state; located in the present-day Ukraine. Located on the Dneiper River, Kiev was easily accessible to Byzantine traders.
mosaics Pictures or designs formed by inlaid pieces of stone or other materials; often used to depict biblical scenes.
patriarch The highest church official in the Byzantine Church.
schism The permanent split between the west's Roman Catholic Church and the east's Orthodox Christian Church.
