longitude a measurement, in degrees, of a place's distance east or west of the Prime Meridian
latitude the measurement, in degrees, of a place's distance north or south of the Equator
meridian an imaginary line on the earth's surface passing through the poles at any given place; any line of longitude
parallel any of the imaginary lines encircling the Earth's surface parallel to the plane of the Equator, used to represent degrees of latitude
arid land that is barren or unproductive because of lack of moisture
temperate moderate in respect to temperature; not subject to prolonged extremes of hot or cold weather
tropical climate in the region of the world surrounding the Equator
desert land with little or no vegetation; gets less than 10" of precipitation annually
elevation the altitude of a place above sea level
Equator an imaginary line around the Earth which separates the northern and southern hemispheres
Prime Meridian an imaginary line around the Earth, running through Greenwich, England, which separates the eastern and western hemispheres
canal an artificial waterway used for travel, shipping or irrigation
strait a narrow channel joining two larger bodies of water
