Homologous Structure | Body parts of organisms that have the same internal structure. |
Analogous Structure | Same function, different structure. Example: wing-bird, and wing-insect. |
Vestigial Structure | Structures found in some organisms even though they may have no use for the structure. |
Gene Pool | All of the genes, including all of the different alleles, present in a population. |
Allelic Frequency | Natural selection on single-gene traits can lead to changes in _______ __________ and thus to evolution. Ex: A population of black mice and whit mice, in a dark enviroment allow the black mice to come predominant, and the white mice to decrease by being easily spotted |
Directional Selection | When individuals at one end of the curve have higher fitness then individuals in the middle or other end of the curve |
Stabilizing Selection | When individuals at the center of the curve have higher fitness than individuals at either end of the curve. Ex: Average sized babies at birth has been favored over large or small babies in the human population. |
Disruptive Selection | When individuals at the upper and lower ends of teh curve have higher fitness than individuals near the middle of the curve. Ex: The medium sized seeds were depleted by Darwin's finches, therefore the large and small beak sizes were favored. |
Geographic Isolation | 2 populations are seperated by geographic barriers such as rivers, mountains, or other bodies of water. |
Reproductive Isolation | When members of 2 populations cannot interbreed and produce fertile offspring. |
Speciation | The formation of a new species. |
Convergent Evolution | Distantly related organisms evolve similar traits due to their enviroment. Examples: Shark and a dolphin |
Divergent Evolution | One species evolves into many distinct species occupying different niches; also known as adaptive radiation. Examples: What the finches were eating, shaped different beaks. |
