Stress The response of the body to the demands of daily life
Stressors Event, person, or task which triggers stress
Distress Unsuccessful coping or harmful response to stress
Eustress Successful coping or healthful response to stress
General Adaptation Syndrome The body's reponse to stress
Alarm First stage of GAS; stressor signals the brain and all the physical changes occur (pupils dilate, heart rate increases, blood pressure increases, digestion slows, saliva decreases, ect.); psychological signs also appear during this stage (anger, depression, guilt, rejection, apathy, ect.)
Resistance Second stage of GAS; body begins to return to normal; demands great deal of energy; stress symptoms diminish and disappear
Exhaustion Extra stage of GAS when the stress does not diminish or disappear; body tires of resisting stress and runs out of energy
Stress Management Skills Techniques used to cope with stressors and decrease harmful effects of stress
Fight or Flight Response that occurs during alarm stage in which stressor signals the brain and physical and psychological symptoms appear
Defense Mechanism Behavior used to cope with emotions and solve uncomfortable situations; used daily to deal with pressures
Compensation DM: A person tries to make up for his or her weakness by developing strengths in other areas
Daydreaming DM: A person escapes unpleasant, boring, or frustrating situations by imagining that he/she is doing something else
Denial DM: Person protects feelings by refusing to recognize problems or facts; they avoid being hurt because they avoid the truth
Displacement DM: A person transfers the emotions he or she feels from the original situation or object to another situation or object
Idealization DM: Person places overexaggerated value on someone or something
Projection DM: A person shifts the blame and/or responsibility for his/her actions onto another person
Put-downs DM: Statements that snub or belittle others
Rationalization DM: A person gives an acceptable reason for behavior in a certain way rather than the true reason
Regression DM: A person begins to act in a way that he/she would have acted as a child
Sublimation DM: A person takes unacceptable impulses and channels these into a socially acceptable goals
Empowered To be inspired because a person feels some sense of control over behavior and decisions
Inactive Decision-making style where a person fails to make choices, and this failure determines what will happen
Reactive Decision-making style where a person allows others to make decisions
Proactive Decision-making style where a person examines the decision to make, identifies and evaluates action to take, selects an action, and takes responsibility for the consequences
Responsible decision-making model Series of steps to assure that decisions lead to actions that promote health, protect safety, follow laws, ect.
Peer pressure Influence that people of similar age or status place on others to encourage them to make certain decisions or to behave in certain ways
Resistance skills Skills used when a person wants to say no to an action or to leave a situation
Morals Standards and principles upon which we base our life choices and actions
Conscience Sense of right and wrong in one's conduct or motives, with the compulsion to do right
Reputation Opinion of others about you
Character Moral strength; how you stick to your morals or how easily you are swayed
Phobia Irrational fear of something
Passive Response style where a person allows others to make all the decisions and works very hard to please others
Aggressive Response style where a person is loud, abusive, and sarcastic
Passive-Aggressive Response style where a person will not overly dominate or abuse others, but they seek control or revenge "behind the scenes"
Assertive Response style where a person acts in his/her best interests without hurting others verbally or physically; person expresses feelings and excercises personal rights
Anorexia Nervosa Eating disorder characterized by self starvation and excess weight loss
Bulimia Nervosa Eating disorder characterized by a cycle of binge eating and purging
Self Injury Attempt to alter one's mood by inflicting physical harm serious enough to cause tissue damage to one's own body
Clout Having a certain influence or power; deserving respect because of your status
Clique A small group of people that keep others from being a part of their group
Prejudice Unfriendly feelings directed against an individual, a group or race of people
Stereotype An idea that many people have about a thing or group that may often be untrue or partly untrue
Ignorance Having limited or no knowledge or understanding of something; uninformed
