| Exposition | The introduction of a story that reveals background information. The characters are described and the setting is established. |
| Inciting Event | An event that changes the ordinary course of life for a character and introduces the conflict. |
| Rising Action | The characters struggle to resolve the conflict while complications arise. The energy of the story increases while the feelings of suspense and excitement build. |
| Climax | The highest point of interest or suspense in a story. It is the turning point or moment of crisis when the action reaches a peak. It usually results in a change in the character situation or a solution to the conflict. |
| Falling Action | After the turning point, the story moves toward a conclusion. The tension and crisis begin to subside. |
| Resolution | The outcome of the conflict is resolved and loose ends and the story is brought to a close. |
| Conflict | The central struggle between opposing forces in a story. |
| Internal Conflict | A struggle that takes place in a characters mind. |
| External Conflict | A character or group of characters struggle against an outside force. |
| Characterization | The process of creating the personality of a character. |

| Point of View | The narrators relationship to the story. |
| 1st Person Point of View | The narration is told by one of the characters in the story. Usually told from the point of view of "I". |
| 3rd Person Point of View | An outside narrator who is not a character in the story tells the story. |
| Protagonist | The main character in the story that the action revolves around. |
| Antagonist | A person or force that opposes the protagonist like another character; society;nature or any opposing force against the protagonist. |
