What did he invention of antibiotics do? Help cure bacterial diseases
A large molecule made of many identical smaller units connected together. Polymer
This accidental discovery by Alexander Fleming became an important life-saving medicine. Penicillin
Substances in foods that can help prevent diseases. Vitamins
These are made with chemicals found in petroleum. Plastics
This substance may have thousands or millions of units in a single chain. polymer
How was rubber made usable year round? Hy heating it and adding sulfur
Gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil are separated from this at a refinery. Petroleum
Describe ways that chemistry has improved health. Chemistry created vitamins and antiobiotics to heal diseases. Fertilizers are created to help grow more foods and lower the costs.
Give some examples of some materials that we use every day that were made by scientists. Nylon in jackets, plastic in toys, concrete in sidewalks and roads.
This silk-like fabric is used in nylons, nets, fabrics and ropes. Nylon
Give some examples of polymers. 1. Nylon
2. Plastic
Why is plastic useful? They are lightweight, long-lasting, and cheap to make.
Why is untreated rubber not useful? It becomes brittle and cracks in cold weather. It melts and becomes gooey in hot weather.
How did scientists work with rubber and petroleum to help our modern day transportation system> They made rubber more durable for use year round and also found ways to make artificial rubber. They found ways to separate the compounds in petroleum to help us get gas and oil for our vehicles.
Why is it important to avoid mixing household cleaners? It can cause dangerous chemical reactions that can lead to lung damage, burns, explosions or even death.
